"Tales Of The Frightened" Boris Karloff

If you are in search of something to get you in the spirit of the Halloween season, this album will do the trick. Twelve spooky stories narrated by the great Boris Karloff. These recordings were originally made back in 1963 for The Readers Digest Magazine Radio Show. After the series was cancelled, Mercury Records released them on vinyl under the title, "Tales Of The Frightened".

The stories were written by Michael Avallone and, to be honest, are not that good. But Karloff's voice and the cool eerie music (performed and recorded by The Electrosoniks) more than make up for the mediocre writing. Mercury went on to release a second volume, which is as good as the first.

This is perfect accompaniment for a rainy, cold October night.  LISTEN

This is a great cover by the practically forgotten Scottish band, The Revillos (also known as The Rezillos). Think a more radical and harder-edged B-52s. Originally recorded by the great, Screaming Lord Sutch, The Revillos' version combines girl group backing vocals, great guitar licks and well timed blood curdling screams.

Check out some of The Rezillos/Revillos other tunes. The song titles should give you an idea of where they are coming from; "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight", "Motorblke Beat",  "Destination Venus" etc....

Weird Book Of The Day: "The Man From Avon" Michael Avallone

Here is another weird and wacky book by Michael Avallone who's entire career consisted of writing  weird and wacky books. Avallone, who passed away in 1999, was one of the most prolific  writers of the 20th century.  He literally wrote hundreds of novels, short stories and novellas in every conceivable genre;  detective, sci-fi, romance, mystery, horror, secret agent, thriller and more. He called himself "The Fastest Typewriter In The East" and "The King Of The Paperbacks". He claimed that he wrote one novel in a day and a half.

Was Michael Avallone a good writer? Well...when you're writing complete novels in 36 hours, you may have to skimp a bit on style and form. Are his books fun to read?  Absolutely.  Or as one of Avallone's fellow writers once said, "He could sure tell a story, he couldn't write, but he could sure tell a story."

"The Man From Avon" tells the story of Larry McKnight, a traveling book salesmen for Avon Books.  It should come as no surprise that Avon was Avallone's publisher at time. McKnight travels the country selling Avon books to book sellers and charming and bedding beautiful women.  Perhaps the most absurd aspect of the plot is the fact that a book salesman could have the same effect on women as James Bond. Although, McKnight is a good salesman and seems to enjoy his work, it is really only a cover for his real occupation as the United States most important UFO  investigator. Throw in some flying saucers, a group of small time eccentrics and a damsel in distress and you have a pretty good read.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of "The Man From Avon" is that Avallone seems to be having as much fun writing it as you do reading it. Throughout the book, he shamelessly promotes Avon Books dropping book titles and authors names wherever possible. He even gives a history of the paperback book industry.  Now how many books about flying saucers give you  information like that.
