Coolest Band In The World #781: The New Riders Of The Purple Sage

Early seventies California cowboy psychedelic c&w hippie band...originally a vehicle for The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia's steel guitar playing...Garcia left after the first album but the band continued on without him..Was a regular opening act for the Dead for many years....NRPS also featured Jefferson Airplanes's Spencer Dryden on drums...

The band also had some of the hippest album covers around  including 1973's, "The Adventures Of Panama Red" which features great California c&w tunes about cowboys, dope, women, dope, the enviorment and well, uhh...dope...They even name drop Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Martin Mull and The Joy Of Cooking, all in the same tune! How seventies is that?!...Recommended for the melodies, harmonies, wacky lyrics and Buddy Cage's always pleasant steel accompaniment...

The Rolling Stone Record Guide sums it up best:  "If you want appropriate background music for rustic keg parties in the wilderness, "NRPS", "Powerglide" or ""Panama Red " will do the trick.
